Fi Brown

My work is concerned with the geometry, poetics and histories of place and space.  I am interested the layers that make up different places and how we inhabit them. I aim to explore atmosphere and ‘weather’ in both natural and domestic environments and the way in which we encounter both security and danger in lived spaces.

Formally, I combine defined shapes, territories, boundaries and borders with accidental, fluid and instinctive elements. This is expressed through calligraphic brush marks, processes and the use of materials that both protect and resist, such as lithographic ink and gum on woodgrain and the density of thick felt. The stories, associations and properties of materials often lead the work.

Drawing is at the core of my practice.
